The Legend

It was 1856, and a young machinist from Cincinnati set out in search of the ideal place to perfect his passion: brewing beer. He headed north to the frontier, to Minnesota, and settled next to a natural spring in the backwoods town of New Ulm. Four years later, together with a German brewmeister, August Schell gave birth to the beer that bears his name.

Thus began The Legend.

Two years later the little ivy-covered red brick brewery somehow survived the famous Dakota conflict, which turned the rest of the town to cinders. And in 1891, when the price of a barrel of beer was a mere $9, the brewery passed into the able hands of August's son, Otto, and later to his daughter's husband, George Marti.

These were the early days of the newborn century, the days when the Schell's baseball team featured such notables as John "Spareribs" Ahrens and Frank "Swift" Lindmeyer; the days when steamboats and clam fishing were commonplace on the Minnesota River; the days when Schell's "Deer Brand" beer became the drink of choice.

Then prohibition. And the little brewery survived by selling chewing gum, candy, and "near beer" (which customers could make even nearer to beer by visiting a still carefully hidden in the woods).

Then the World Wars, when the Schell's Hobo Band was formed to help ease the pain of troubled times.

Today, the brewery still stands, the second oldest family owned brewery in the country. Deer still roam the grounds - decendants of August Schell's original herd. Wild peacocks come and go at will.

And the award-winning beer continues to be carefully brewed by a fifth generation owner. Made in measured batches as a guarantee of quality.
